The weather is starting to cool, and as any New Englander knows, that means the snow and frigid days are right around the corner. While winter can be beautiful in its own right, it also brings a new set of home maintenance rules. There are a few things you should consider doing to ensure your home is in the best possible condition before winter hits. Check out these tips!
Shut off Exterior Water Lines
Everyone knows what can happen if your pipes freeze. However, one thing people sometimes forget to do when maintaining their water lines is ensuring that all exterior lines have been turned off. Your hose, for example, should be turned off and drained. If water sits in a hose during the winter it will freeze and when it does, it can back up indoors and cause pipes to burst inside your home!
A low effort installation that can make a world of difference on your heating bill is adding weatherstripping to make sure your home is air tight. A couple of the most common areas homeowners lose heat through are their doors and windows. If you feel a cold breeze coming from under your door or in between panes on your windows, installing weatherstripping will certainly save you money on your heating bills this winter!
Check Your Roof and Gutters
While we discussed the importance of cleaning your gutters in our last post, we didn’t discuss how debris-filled gutters can lead to ice dams. With more places for moisture to get trapped within the debris, not only is it easier for the gutters to freeze, but there is less room for the water to go. This causes water to back up onto your roof even faster and can cause water damage on your roof deck, particularly is your roof isn’t in perfect condition. Making sure your gutters are clean goes hand-in-hand with checking on your roofs integrity. If you see any cracks, missing shingles, or anything else out of the ordinary, it is important to address these issues before the snow falls and leaves you with a more expensive, and colder, problem on your hands.
