Fall has arrived, and with it comes the need to do a little maintenance around your home. Preparing for fall and winter is important to do before the snow begins to fall. Knowing a few tips and areas to tackle first will help you to ensure your home is prepared for the dropping temperatures!
HVAC System
Make sure that you’re changing your filter on a regular basis. If you haven’t changed it during the summer months, now is the time to do so. It helps you to have a more efficient heating system, and it cuts down on dust, dander, pollen, and other irritants in your home. Also, the filter in your furnace, if you have one, should be changed as well.
Now is the perfect time to also bring out an HVAC technician to do a once-over of your entire system. Cleaning the ductwork, checking the furnace and heating unit you have, and repairing any small issues will help you stay warm and toasty when the winter weather hits.
Check Your Doors and Windows
Make sure the seals around your doors and windows are fresh and repaired. If they are cracked or leaking this can cause you to lose heat this winter. If you change your window screens out during the summer, now is a good time to put the cold weather screens back on. Go around the home and be sure to inspect your frames to see if any are loose or broken. Repairing them now will save you from lots of cold drafts in the future.
Clean Your Gutters and Downspout Areas
With the crisp fall air comes the torrential downpour of dead leaves. While the leaves are beautiful, they also can wreak havoc on your gutters. Be sure you’re keeping a watch on them and cleaning them out on a routine basis. Leaves can clog up your gutters and cause water to stand against your home. This can lead to rotted wood on your roof. This is a good time to also inspect your brackets that support your gutters and ensure they are secure. Don’t forget to make sure that the water doesn’t pool up below the downspout area. Double-check that proper drainage is installed so the water doesn’t cause damage to your foundation or other concrete areas.
Clean the Chimney
Fall and cooler days mean it is time to enjoy a crackling fire. Before you start one in your home, ensure you have the chimney and fireplace cleaned professionally to reduce any issues.
